Blitzed Ballymacarrett: the 85th Anniversary of the German Air Raids
Nigel Henderson of History Hub Ulster has been researching and documenting details for the fatalities - civilian and military - of the 1941 German air raids. In recent months, Nigel has been examining the street directories of 1941, 1942, 1943, and subsequent years to identify and document the Belfast streets in which residential housing was lost as a result of the air raids. He has also documented the places of worship that were damaged, destroyed, or demolished as a result of the air raids.
The Blitzed Ballymacarrett talk cover the impact on the area between the Albertbridge Road and the Belfast & County Down Railway tracks. Nigel will provide detailed biographical information on a selection of the fatalities and will highlight the loss of housing in Ballymacarrett. He will also cover the damage to churches and mission halls in the area, with special attention being paid to the Newtownards Road Methodist Church, which was the only church in East Belfast to be destroyed/demolished as a result of the air raids.
